Needy Done Right

O God, You are my God; with deepest longing I will seek You; my soul [my life, my very self] thirsts for You, my flesh longs and sighs for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1 AMP)

There is nothing wrong with being needy. We just have to learn where to take our deepest needs.

God created us for relationships. We need love, reassurance, encouragement, and connection. Those are legitimate needs. But there is a difference between expecting people to meet relational needs and expecting them to satisfy a spiritual thirst.

I have learned that sometimes I place expectations on people that exceed their human capacity. When I depend on someone else to establish my worth, sustain my peace, or make me feel whole, I am asking them to carry a responsibility that belongs to God.

I have to be careful not to make someone responsible for resolving an emptiness that existed long before they entered my life.

David understood where his deepest need belonged. He declared, “My soul thirsts for You.” He recognized that only God could satisfy what his soul was longing for.

Maybe some of our discontent comes from being disconnected from the Divine Source while expecting people to compensate for that disconnection.

Someone can continually reassure us, yet we remain insecure. They can demonstrate their love, yet we question whether we are loved. And before long, we demand more, hoping the next gesture will finally be enough.

But what happens when more is never enough?

A hole in the soul is one human hands cannot patch.

Now, making God our Source does not excuse people from showing up in healthy relationships. Love, respect, consistency, and reciprocity still matter. Sometimes people genuinely fail us. Other times, we expect them to meet needs beyond their capacity.

Disappointment requires discernment.

I am learning to appreciate what people bring into my life without demanding that they become everything I need.

God is not asking us to stop needing people. He is inviting us to stop expecting people to be Him.

Let people be people. Let God be God.

That’s needy done right.

“Need is not the problem. Trouble begins when I expect human hands to fill a space God created for His presence.” — DeMi

  2. Where might my disappointment reveal an unresolved need within me?

  3. How can I make God my Source while maintaining healthy relationship expectations?
