Shine Anyway!

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good deeds and moral excellence, and [recognize and honor and] glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:16 AMP)

I’ve learned that people only throw shade on what shines!

Someone will always find fault with what you’re doing, question your contributions, or minimize your accomplishments. Sometimes their criticism has less to do with what you’re doing and more to do with what your progress brings to the surface in them.

But here’s what I’ve also learned. I cannot spend my life managing someone else’s insecurities at the expense of what God has placed inside of me.

I’ve watched people shrink themselves to make others comfortable. They downplay their accomplishments, second-guess their abilities, and sometimes even apologize for doing well. All because someone else has decided their light is too bright.

I’ve had to remind myself that humility does not require me to diminish who God created me to be. I can acknowledge my gifts without arrogance, celebrate my progress without comparison, and contribute meaningfully without seeking everyone’s approval.

Now, let me be clear. Not everyone who challenges me is a detractor. Some people offer correction because they genuinely want to see me grow. Wisdom requires knowing the difference between constructive feedback and criticism rooted in someone else’s discomfort.

Matthew 5:16 reminds me that my light has a purpose beyond personal recognition. What God has placed inside of me is meant to make a difference and ultimately bring Him glory.

So, I’m not dimming my light to accommodate someone else’s darkness. I’m going to keep growing, contributing, and becoming who God created me to be.

And if my light bothers someone, they have the freedom to cover their eyes. I have the responsibility to keep shining!

“I refuse to make myself smaller to accommodate someone else's insecurities. God gave me a light to shine, not a reason to hide.” — DeMi
